Astana’s akimat has denied reports that a site has already been chosen for the construction of the capital’s second airport. The press service said the information was not true and that no final decision has been made, Orda.kz reports.
The reports claimed the airport would be built northwest of the capital, toward the village of Shortandy, along the Astana–Kokshetau highway.
The akimat emphasized that this territory is outside the capital’s borders and therefore cannot be included in Astana’s general plan as a possible site for the second airport.
To date, no final decision has been made on the location of the second airport. As part of adjustments to Astana’s master plan, only potential directions for the possible placement of the airport are being considered, the akimat said.
After deputies of the capital’s maslikhat approve the draft amendments and additions to Astana’s general plan through 2035, the document will be sent to Kazakhstan’s government for approval.
At the end of May, Orda.kz reported that Astana had not yet chosen a final site for the second airport. Transport Minister Nurlan Sauranbayev had named two locations as the most likely options.
