Diamond Cheaper Than Sneakers: Confiscated Stone Sells for $47 in Almaty

A confiscated diamond was sold for approximately $47 through Kazakhstan’s E-Qazyna auction platform—nearly 18 times below its starting price, Orda.kz reports.
The 0.02-carat baguette-cut diamond was graded I for color and SI for clarity under GIA standards.
An appraiser valued the stone at about $276, but the auction organizer set the starting price at approximately $828. With no buyers at that level, the price fell to $47, stopping just above the minimum of $41.
The seller was Almaty’s Department of State Property and Privatization.
