Kazakhstan’s Government Formally Resigns as First Kurultai Session Opens

Kazakhstan’s government formally resigned as the country’s newly elected unicameral Kurultai opened its first session. The cabinet will continue performing its duties until a new government is formed, Orda.kz reports.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev opened the session in Astana and congratulated Kazakhstanis on the launch of the new legislature.
A presidential decree issued shortly afterward instructed the outgoing government to remain in office until the new cabinet is approved.
Tokayev also nominated Aibek Dadebay for chair of the Kurultai, citing his extensive experience in public administration.
Once the Kurultai establishes its leadership and internal structure, Tokayev will submit nominees for vice president and prime minister to deputies. He will then appoint cabinet members following consultations with the legislature, as well as a new deputy chair of the Security Council.
After the Kurultai and the government are fully formed, I will deliver the annual Address to the People of Kazakhstan,Tokayev said.
The president said the initiatives announced in the address must be implemented jointly and promptly by the executive and legislative branches.
The public’s expectations of deputies will always be high. This is no time for empty promises, false statements or populist slogans. Our society is maturing,Tokayev said.
He added that political parties are expected to gain greater influence within Kazakhstan’s system of government with each new election cycle.
