Kazakhstan Expands AI-95 and AI-98 Checks to Gas Stations and Fuel Depots

Kazakhstan is expanding its investigation into complaints about AI-95 and AI-98 gasoline. Inspectors will examine the entire supply chain, from the Pavlodar refinery and fuel depots to gas stations, Orda.kz reports.
The Pavlodar Petrochemical Plant previously said independent tests found no quality issues in retained AI-95 and AI-98 samples. According to the refinery, the fuel met technical regulations and national standards.
However, the tests did not explain the complaints from motorists. The Ministry of Trade and Integration has now joined the investigation.
The Committee for Technical Regulation and Metrology sent samples taken at the refinery to an independent laboratory. Specialists are also testing fuel containing additives used by Sinooil, Qazaq Oil and Helios. Results are expected within a week.
Inspectors made test purchases at 17 gas stations: five in Almaty, five in Almaty Region, six in Abai Region and one in Zhambyl Region. The samples are undergoing laboratory testing. Fuel depots will be inspected next.
The ministry has received 12 complaints: nine from Astana, one from Pavlodar and two from North Kazakhstan Region.
If any fuel is found to violate technical requirements, its sale may be prohibited and the affected batches withdrawn.
Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov previously said gas station operators and refineries were blaming one another. The expanded investigation is expected to establish where any quality problems may have occurred.
