Kazakhstan and China are preparing an agreement that would allow their citizens to drive in either country using licenses issued at home, Orda.kz reports.

Under the draft agreement, Kazakhstani citizens visiting or living in China could use valid Kazakhstani driver’s licenses. Chinese citizens would receive the same right in Kazakhstan. Local traffic laws and restrictions would still apply.

The agreement would also allow drivers to exchange their licenses for local ones without additional training or examinations. The procedure would follow the laws of the country where the application is submitted.

Public consultation runs through August 30, 2026. The changes will take effect only after the agreement is signed and formally enters into force.

Kazakhstan previously signed a similar driver’s license recognition memorandum with the UAE in Abu Dhabi.
