Tensions between Ukraine and Hungary have escalated following mutual accusations of espionage, reports Orda.kz.
Hours after Ukrainian authorities announced the detention of two former military personnel allegedly linked to Hungarian intelligence, Hungarian officials responded by expelling two Ukrainian diplomats.
According to Telex, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that the individuals were accused of conducting intelligence activities under diplomatic cover in Budapest.
We Hungarians want peace, we say ‘no’ to war, and we will not allow Hungary to be drawn into it... It is also up to the Hungarian people to decide whether Ukraine will become part of the EU, Szijjártó said.
He added that Hungary has never supplied weapons to Ukraine and has no plans to do so, while accusing Kyiv of engaging in “discrediting actions.” According to Szijjártó, Budapest’s refusal to send military aid prompted the accusations from Ukraine.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Security Service announced the detention of two individuals suspected of working for Hungarian intelligence. They allegedly gathered information related to military infrastructure in the Zakarpattia region.
