On May 9, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that it had uncovered a spy network, reports Orda.kz.

As reported by Reuters, the SBU detained two individuals accused of passing classified information about Ukraine's defense infrastructure to Hungarian military intelligence. This marks the first known instance of Hungarian intelligence allegedly conducting espionage against Ukraine.

Hungarian officials have yet to respond to the SBU’s claims.

Although Hungary is a member of both the European Union and NATO — alliances that have supported Ukraine in its conflict with Russia — relations between Kyiv and Budapest have been strained.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has expressed skepticism toward Western military aid to Ukraine and continues to maintain ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Reuters notes.

The two suspects are reportedly former members of the Ukrainian military and may face charges of treason.

They were allegedly recruited by a Hungarian intelligence officer and tasked with relaying information about Ukraine’s air defense systems and military facilities in the Zakarpattia region, which borders Hungary.
