Farmers in the Kostanay region have again raised the issue of damage caused by saigas and are asking for permission to shoot them directly in the fields, Orda.kz reports, citing APK Novosti.
According to farmers quoted by the publication, the animals destroyed significant parts of the harvest in previous years, and some farms were unable to collect their crops at all. They say the situation is continuing this year: because of saigas, agricultural producers are reducing the area they plan to sow.
According to the regional association of agricultural producers, the problem has still not been resolved despite numerous appeals to state bodies. The issue of disease among the animals was also raised separately. Veterinarians do not rule out the possible spread of foot-and-mouth disease among saigas, which is causing additional concern.
The head of one of the farms, Oleg Danilenko, said huge areas in the Turgai region had been affected and that farmers do not understand how they will repay their loans. According to him, some farms may reduce their sowing area by about 30% this year.
Farmers are proposing that damage be compensated from the state budget and that crop insurance be introduced. However, their main demand remains permission to shoot saigas in the fields throughout the growing season.
