The investigation into the death of 30-year-old Nurganat Gaipbayev — uncle of Sherzat Polat — has been closed, Orda.kz reports. Family lawyer Meirman Shekeyev announced the decision on Instagram, noting it is only temporary and that a petition to reopen the case will be submitted.
Gaipbayev was found dead on December 9, 2024, near a cemetery on the outskirts of Talgar — the same one where Sherzat is buried. His body showed signs of strangulation, with an LED wire around his neck.
The location, combined with an ambiguous final message, raised serious doubts. He had been set to testify in court in his nephew’s homicide trial; he himself had been stabbed three times during the conflict that claimed Sherzat's life.
The family has questioned the official suggestion of suicide. Activists and legal experts have pointed out inconsistencies: the scene wasn’t secured, his car was moved before relatives arrived, and key evidence was allegedly ignored. Gaipbayev had recently returned to work, was preparing for trial, and appeared emotionally stable.
His death occurred just days before critical court sessions.
In a video posted by Shekeyev, the lawyer speaks emotionally about grief, strength, and Sherzat's family still holding together despite immense pain.
Earlier, on October 4, 2023, a fight broke out between teenagers in Talgar. Two were injured; one — 16-year-old Sherzat Polat — later died in the hospital. Police detained the suspects and promised oversight. One of the assailants was later sentenced to 23 years in prison.
