Camera Trap Captures Wolf Among Kulans in Kazakhstan

A camera trap in Altyn-Emel National Park captured a wolf and a herd of kulans drinking at the same watering hole, Orda.kz reports.

The footage shows the animals noticing one another and keeping their distance. Although wolves prey on kulans, the herd remained at the watering hole and continued drinking.

Park specialists linked the unusual encounter to the extreme heat. When water becomes scarce, species that ordinarily avoid one another may gather at the same source.

The kulan is a rare species of wild ass native to Central Asia. It is adapted to arid environments and is listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book of protected species.
