A Ukrainian drone strike hit the Kristall oil depot in Engels on January 8, sparking a fire that claimed the lives of two firefighters, Gennady Afanasyev and Zhaslan Teleupov, according to Orda.kz reports.
The attack was in the Saratov region city of Engels, which lies approximately 200 kilometers from the border with Kazakhstan. Local authorities have declared a state of emergency as the fire continues to burn.
Engels, a recurring target of strikes, houses a strategic bomber base that Russia uses to launch attacks against Ukraine.
According to Astra, the Kristall facility supplied fuel to military aircraft.
There have also been Russian strikes on Ukraine. In Zaporizhzhia, a missile attack killed 13 people and wounded 63 others, as reported by the Zaporizhzhia Region State Emergency Service.
The Insider reports that the strike targeted the Motor Sich plant, known for manufacturing aircraft engines.
