At a June 5 press conference, Yermegiyayev’s lawyers, Alla Kotlova and Anara Kusainova, announced that his request for parole is currently under court review, Orda.kz reports.
They stated that they aim to inform the public about details that may have been overlooked.
According to Kusainova, many people, especially younger generations, are unfamiliar with the full context of the case due to the time that has passed.
Yermegiyayev was convicted as part of a large-scale investigation into the embezzlement of 10 billion tenge during the construction of EXPO-2017. A total of 23 individuals were sentenced.
Yermegiyayev received 14 years for accepting a 780 million tenge bribe and has served nearly ten years so far.
In May 2025, following calls by lawmakers to reexamine the case, the Anti-Corruption Agency confirmed that it is still working to identify the offshore destination of the stolen funds, allegedly transferred by unidentified individuals.
