The Court of Appeal has issued its final decision in the case involving the attack on Shymkent Deputy Akim Ruslan Berdenov, Orda.kz reports.
The convicted assailant, Zhiembay, had appealed for his prison sentence to be replaced with a restricted one, arguing that he had not intended to kill the official but had only “caused grievous bodily harm.”
Lawyers for the victim, however, insisted the case be reclassified, maintaining that Zhiembay had carefully planned an assassination attempt and acted with intent to kill.
The court rejected both appeals, leaving the original verdict in place.
Zhiembay — a former subordinate of Berdenov — will serve nine years in prison.
