The Atyrau Region Department of Ecology fined Potential Oil LLP nearly 1.5 billion tenge after an inspection uncovered violations of environmental legislation. The company subsequently attempted to challenge the penalties in court, Orda.kz reports.
The violations included exceeding permitted emission limits, contaminating soil with petroleum products, improper wastewater and waste management, and operating without the required environmental permits.
Following the inspection, the company received administrative fines totalling 1.4338 billion tenge. So far, authorities have collected 21.9 million tenge.
The company challenged the fines in court. However, both the first-instance and appellate courts rejected its complaints, the Department of Ecology said.
If the company fails to pay the remaining fines within the prescribed period, the rulings will be referred for compulsory enforcement.
