Uzbekistan has begun preparing a project for its second nuclear power plant, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said at a ceremony launching investment projects in the Khorezm region, Orda.kz reports, citing Nuz.uz.
Mirziyoyev said extensive preparatory work was underway but provided no details about the proposed plant, including its location, capacity, cost or potential contractors.
Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant is already under construction near Lake Tuzkan in the Jizzakh region, with Russia’s Rosatom serving as the main contractor.
The project was initially designed as a 330 MW small modular nuclear plant. It was subsequently expanded into an integrated complex comprising two 1,000 MW reactors and two 55 MW small modular reactors, bringing its planned capacity to 2.1 GW.
Kazakhstan is also preparing to build its first nuclear power plant. Construction is expected to enter its active phase in 2027, with the plant scheduled to begin operating in the mid-2030s.
