A wildfire near the village of Unirek in the Karaganda region’s Shet District has been contained after burning 650 hectares, Orda.kz reports, citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Dry grass accounted for 613.6 hectares of the affected area. The remainder was forest land managed by the Karaganda Forestry and Wildlife Protection Enterprise.
The threat of the fire spreading further into the forest has been eliminated, the ministry said.
Mountainous terrain, inaccessible areas and strong winds complicated the response. Two Kazaviaspas helicopters were deployed to tackle isolated hotspots, dropping a total of 78 tons of water.
Around 310 personnel and 44 ground vehicles participated in the operation. Crews are continuing to extinguish remaining smoldering areas.
