Will Kazakhstan Have Enough Coal This Winter?

Kazakhstan transported 19 million tons of coal by rail between May 1 and August 17 as the country prepared for the coming heating season, Orda.kz reports.
According to the Ministry of Transport, 17.8 million tons were delivered to combined heat and power plants, while another 1.2 million tons went to utility providers. Total deliveries were roughly unchanged from the same period last year.
By mid-August, power plants had accumulated 4.1 million tons of coal. Utility providers held more than 300,000 tons in reserve.
Officials say the existing stockpiles and available rail capacity should be sufficient for the heating season. Additional attention will be given to periods of peak demand, when coal shipments rise sharply.
The ministry also said the available freight-car fleet should be sufficient to supply power plants, utility providers and industrial companies throughout the winter.
