Belarusian hikers found a man’s body on the Severtsov Glacier in the Almaty region during a two-week trek. Rescuers have been sent to recover it, Orda.kz reports.
The group completed its route on August 16 and sent the location coordinates, photos and video to the 109 public service, according to a Facebook post by Anastasia Akhmetova.
The hikers had seen reports that Russian groups encountered the remains in 2025 and believed they had already been recovered. Akhmetova said at least two groups had passed the body this summer.
The Belarusians also met hikers from St. Petersburg who said they had found documents in the deceased man’s backpack and intended to give them to rescuers. It is unclear whether they did so.
The Emergency Situations Department dispatched a Kazaviaspas aircraft carrying Barys rescue personnel and Disaster Medicine Center staff. Once recovered from the glacier, the body will be handed over to the Almaty Region Police Department.
Officials said the operation was complicated by the glacier’s remote location, steep terrain and altitude of approximately 4,300 meters. The man’s identity, cause of death and how long his body had been there remain unknown.
