The Jezkazgan City Court has sentenced a woman to seven years in prison for sending extremist materials to Kazakhstan from Syria over the course of a year, Orda.kz reports.
A native of Jezkazgan who had traveled to Syria distributed radical religious content via Telegram to a relative living in the city of Satpayev. In court, the defendant fully admitted her guilt and requested a lighter sentence.
However, the judge upheld the term proposed by the prosecution.
The criminal offense under Part Two of Article 256 of the Criminal Code ('Propaganda of Terrorism') falls under the category of severe crimes. The article provides for a punishment in the form of imprisonment for a term of seven to 12 years with confiscation of property. The court imposed the punishment taking into account the nature and degree of public danger of the criminal offense committed,
explained the Ulytau regional court.
The convicted woman has minor children, who have been placed under the care of guardianship authorities. The sentence has not yet entered into legal force.
