Since the early morning of March 21, a long line of vehicles has formed at the Karakoga border checkpoint, located along the Kazakhstan-Russia frontier, Orda.kz reports, citing Petropavlovsk.news.
North Kazakhstan Region residents travel to Omsk and other Russian cities for various reasons.
The key motivations include:
- Cultural Events: In recent months, trips to Russia for entertainment — such as concerts and cultural events in Omsk— have grown increasingly popular
- Medical Services: Many Kazakhstan citizens opt for treatment in Russian clinics. Reasons range from distrust in local healthcare to wanting to avoid long wait times for appointments with specialists
- Family Ties: Many Kazakhstani citizens have relatives living in Russia
- Extended holidays offer an opportunity to visit loved ones and spend time together
Despite the unfavorable ruble exchange rate, Petropavlovsk.news notes that Kazakhstanis continue to travel actively to Russia.
