Vice Finance Minister Asset Turysov has detailed how and when artificial intelligence will be introduced into Kazakhstan’s customs system, Orda.kz reports.
Speaking at a press conference at the Central Communications Service, Turysov explained that modernization is already underway.
The current top priority at customs is to replace all old systems so that there’s a single, end-to-end system at the border, eliminating the need to integrate different systems. AI is also planned to assist brokers, provide consultations, pre-fill goods declarations, and identify reference books. While humans manually enter data, AI can suggest the best way to fill it out, which reduces time,
Turysov said.
Artificial intelligence will also be tested in cargo clearance, using image recognition to verify whether goods match the categories stated in declarations.
We’ll launch the digital import module after we’ve tested it with foreign trade participants, customs brokers, and government agencies. We plan to launch this module in the first quarter of next year, after which we’ll pilot the AI elements we’re currently testing,
added the vice minister.
Orda.kz has previously reported on issues at the Kazakhstan-China border, including smuggling and corruption among officials, as well as the Khorgos case involving Gadji Gadjiyev and former Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu.
In recent months, long queues have also formed along the Kazakhstan-Russia border. At the end of October, Russian President Vladimir Putin unilaterally changed EAEU rules, simplifying the import of goods from Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan into Russia.
