Kazakhstan will join the international Earth Hour campaign on March 28, with hundreds of sites across the country turning off their lights for one hour, Orda.kz reports.
From 20:30 to 21:30 local time, cities across Kazakhstan will switch off lights in homes, offices and on the streets, as well as decorative lighting on buildings.
According to the Ministry of Ecology, this year’s campaign is dedicated to the development of ecotourism. In total, more than 500 facilities across the country will “go dark” for an hour, from administrative buildings and shopping centres to industrial enterprises and social institutions.
In Astana, the lighting at iconic sites will traditionally be turned off, including Baiterek, Astana Opera, the Hazret Sultan Mosque, the Independence Palace and Astana Arena. In Almaty, shopping centres and commercial facilities will join the campaign, while in Shymkent the lights will be turned off at akimats and city administration buildings.
At the same time, street lighting and traffic lights will remain on.
Earth Hour is held annually under the auspices of the World Wildlife Fund and is considered the world’s largest environmental initiative: billions of people in different countries take part in it. Around the world, the lighting of landmark sites is switched off for one hour, from the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum to the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour.
Joining is simple: just switch off the lights and electrical appliances for one hour.
