Kazakhstan Suspended 11 Polling Stations Abroad Due to Middle East Escalation

Due to the worsening situation in the Middle East, Kazakhstan has temporarily suspended the operation of 11 polling stations in 10 countries, Orda.kz reports. As of March 10, 71 polling stations remain open in 54 countries.
This was announced by Foreign Ministry representative Yerlan Alimbayev at a meeting of the Central Referendum Commission.
According to him, the restrictions affected polling stations at Kazakhstan’s diplomatic missions in Iran, Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Lebanon, Kuwait, Ukraine and Ethiopia, as well as the Consulate General of Kazakhstan in Dubai.
In this regard, citizens of Kazakhstan in these countries will temporarily be unable to vote.
In the Middle East, we partially closed polling stations in certain countries. As a result, 11 polling stations in 10 countries were temporarily suspended. These are all the countries that fell into the escalation zone. Therefore, because of the situation, citizens will not be able to vote in these countries.he said.
At the same time, Alimbayev stressed that Kazakhstan’s diplomatic missions continue to operate and that there is no question of evacuating them.
Diplomats are working around the clock. The main task today is to ensure the safe return of our citizens to their homeland and their safe stay in these countries.he noted.
In total, according to the Central Referendum Commission, 71 polling stations in 54 countries were prepared for voting abroad. According to the Foreign Ministry, 14,230 citizens of Kazakhstan are included in the voter lists abroad.
Election materials, including ballots and ballot boxes, have already been received and will be delivered to polling stations by diplomatic courier.
In addition, 68 media outlets from 31 countries, planning to send 185 journalists, have shown interest in covering the referendum.
