Kazakhstan Moves to Expand the List of State Secrets

The Mazhilis has approved in the first reading a draft law that tightens liability for the distribution of extremist materials, Orda.kz reports.
The document also contains amendments aimed at strengthening the protection of state secrets. It introduces a ban on the transportation of extremist and terrorist materials and proposes changes to a number of laws, including legislation on combating terrorism and extremism.

During work on the bill, the deputies introduced a number of amendments, including the classification as state secrets of information disclosing allocations or actual expenditures for the construction, repair and maintenance not only of sensitive facilities, but also of specially sensitive and specially protected sites of the Republic of Kazakhstan.deputy Olzhas Kuspekov said in his report.
In addition, the powers of state bodies responsible for combating terrorism and preventing extremism are being clarified.
A separate block of changes concerns service in special agencies. In particular, the amendments:
- formalize the rights of managers during internal investigations;
- clarify the rules for using the personnel reserve of national security agencies;
- expand the list of persons who retain their rank when entering military and special educational institutions.
