Kazakhstan plans to change the system of medical training. The Health Ministry is proposing to allow graduates to begin working without mandatory residency, Orda.kz reports.

The bill is now under discussion in the Mazhilis. The changes would apply to students admitted from 2022 onward. For earlier cohorts, the current training system would remain unchanged.

Graduates would be allowed to work after completing their studies and internship in six core areas:

  • general practice,
  • internal medicine,
  • pediatrics,
  • surgery,
  • obstetrics and gynecology,
  • pediatric surgery.

At the same time, the structure of training would also change.

The internship will acquire the status of full-fledged clinical practice: the intern will work under the supervision of a mentor, take part in patient treatment, gain access to medical information systems, and receive pay for their work.the ministry said in a statement.

Residency would remain in place, but would become a stage of in-depth specialization for doctors planning to work in narrower fields.

According to the Health Ministry, the amendments would help young specialists prepare better for clinical practice.
