Hundreds of drivers with Armenian, Georgian, and Russian license plates gathered in Atyrau after increased police patrols from other regions of Kazakhstan appeared in the city, Orda.kz reports, citing Ak Zhaiyk.
Additional police officers from Astana, the Karaganda region, and the Kostanay region had earlier arrived in Atyrau. They checked drivers’ documents, insurance, first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and vehicles with foreign registration.
The checks prompted hundreds of drivers to take to the streets. They discussed possible inspections, fines, and the future of cars with foreign license plates. Their main concerns were insurance and whether their vehicle registrations would be considered legal.
According to unofficial data, Atyrau has more than 5000 cars with foreign license plates, mostly from Georgia and Armenia.
Drivers said police, akimat, prosecutor’s office, and KNB officers came to the scene, but they did not receive clear explanations.
The Atyrau region police department said the increased patrols were linked to the operational preventive campaign “Stop Violations.” Additional crews have temporarily arrived in the city, and the raids are being carried out only to prevent offenses and monitor road safety, police said. The checks will continue until May 23.
