Kazakhstan’s Senate has approved a draft law ratifying an agreement with Uzbekistan on the state border regime, Orda.kz reports.
The agreement was signed on August 8, 2024, in Astana. It formally sets the rules for cooperation between the two countries along their shared border.
The document was prepared after the demarcation of the Kazakh-Uzbek border was completed. It is based on an earlier state border treaty signed by the two countries in 2001, as well as the 2022 demarcation treaty.
The agreement sets out the general rules of the border regime. It regulates the maintenance of the border line and border markers, the movement of people, vehicles and cargo, as well as flights and various types of work in the border zone.
It also defines how Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will prevent and resolve possible border incidents.
The Senate says the law will help strengthen national security.
