Almaty Court Upholds Sentences in Deadly Hostel Fire Case

The appeal in the case of the Almaty hostel fire, which began on October 21, has concluded. The Almaty City Court upheld the original verdicts but dismissed two civil lawsuits against one of the defendants, Orda.kz reports.
The court confirmed the first-instance sentences:
- Adilbek Mukhamedyarov, the hostel director, will serve five years in prison
- Alexander Pekelnik, head of the company that installed the fire alarm system a year before the tragedy, received four years
At the request of the affected parties, the judge withdrew two civil claims filed against Pekelnik
The fire broke out on November 30, 2023, in a hostel in Almaty, killing 13 people.
