A ventilation pipe collapsed in the domestic departures area at Almaty airport, Orda.kz reports.
Part of the metal structure fell, while the remaining section was left hanging in the air. No one was injured.
Emergency Department employees arrived at the scene, the airport’s press service said. According to the airport, the ventilation system in the building is currently being upgraded. Workers were lowering a flexible pipe to fix it at the required level.
The pipe had been pre-secured, after which it was supposed to be gradually lowered to the required level and then fixed in place. The structure was held by safety cables, but during the descent the joint came apart. As a result, the corrugated pipe remained hanging in the air on the safety line, the airport said.
The airport said the hanging pipe had since been completely removed. However, social media users said the pipe frightened visitors when it came down.
Airport management apologized to passengers for the inconvenience and said the terminal is now operating as usual.
Earlier, Orda.kz reported another flooding incident at Almaty airport. According to eyewitnesses, water was dripping from the ceiling inside the building. After that incident, airport management was held administratively liable.
