Second Przewalski’s Horse Foal Born as Species Returns to Kazakhstan

A second Przewalski’s horse foal has been born in Kazakhstan under a program restoring the species to its historical range, Orda.kz reports.

The foal’s mother is a mare named Umbra. Both remain under observation at the Alibi Wild Ungulate Reintroduction Center in the Altyn Dala reserve, according to the Ministry of Ecology.

Kazakhstan began returning Przewalski’s horses to its steppe in 2024. Seven animals arrived that year, followed by seven in 2025 and eight more in 2026.

The first foal was born on August 22 to Tessa, a seven-year-old mare brought from Berlin’s Tierpark in 2024.

The birth of a second foal shows that the horses are adapting to the steppe and beginning to reproduce naturally,the ministry said.

Przewalski’s horse is the world’s last surviving truly wild horse. It disappeared from the wild during the 20th century but survived through captive-breeding programs. Kazakhstan is now working with international partners to establish a self-sustaining population in the Kostanay Region.
