Almaty Takes Back Its Nearly Century-Old Hippodrome

The historic Almaty Hippodrome has been returned to municipal ownership and will retain its sporting purpose, Orda.kz reports.
The city administration said the 39.1-hectare complex would remain intact. Its zoning and the designated use of the land will not change.
Authorities will now develop a restoration plan covering the grandstands, stables, racetracks, engineering networks and other infrastructure. Work will be carried out in stages because the complex is heavily worn.
Founded in 1930, Almaty Hippodrome is one of the oldest equestrian facilities in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. City and national competitions are expected to resume after modernization.
The site’s deterioration and possible redevelopment had previously raised concerns among equestrian groups, which called on the authorities to return it to public ownership.
