New Terminal, Old Problems: Almaty Airport Flooded Again

It is raining in Almaty, and the airport is flooded again. This time, the inspection and passport control area was affected, Orda.kz reports.
According to eyewitnesses, water was dripping from the ceiling inside the building, while large puddles also formed outside.
Entrances to the airport were temporarily blocked. Queues formed at the international terminal, and readers shared footage from the scene.
I was surprised that water was pouring from the ceiling in the new airport after the rain.Alyona Stepanishcheva said.
The airport’s press service confirmed that the roof had indeed leaked in terminals T1 and T2 because of heavy rain, but said the situation was now under control. The consequences were dealt with in half an hour, and the flight schedule was not changed.
The airport is operating normally. An infrastructure inspection is being carried out to determine the causes and prevent such situations in the future.the statement said.
Almaty Airport has been owned by Turkey’s TAV Airports Holding since 2020. Its biggest project in Almaty during that time was the construction of a new terminal, which opened in June 2024.
The new international terminal has an area of nearly 54,000 square meters. Its construction cost $780 million.
