In the Mangystau region, an 18-year-old conscript was admitted to a psychiatric center after an attempted suicide. His relatives claim hazing at military unit 99116 in the Beineu district led to the incident, Orda.kz reports, citing Inform Bureau.
According to the soldier’s mother, Laura Shyntemirova, her son was subjected to beatings and abuse, after which he was sent to a psychiatric hospital. She said she only learned of his hospitalization through other parents.
The commander called me and said my son had heart and kidney problems and was being taken to the doctor. In reality, he was secretly admitted to a mental hospital. I wouldn’t have even known about it if I hadn’t heard from other parents,
the mother said.
The soldier also complained that conscripts were forced to perform heavy labor and were mistreated in the restroom. According to Shyntemirova, he was even ordered to carry bricks for construction work at a private home.
Madi Tokanov, director of the Mangystau Regional Mental Health Center, confirmed that three soldiers showing signs of suicidal behavior had been admitted.
“They had cuts on their hands. Psychologists and psychotherapists are working with them,” he said.
An investigation has been launched into the circumstances of the hospitalization, and a special commission has been created.
Just last week, a similar case drew attention when 19-year-old conscript Dinmukhamed Shynarbek died under unclear circumstances in the Almaty region.
Officially declared a suicide, his family disputes this conclusion and is demanding an inquiry.
