Yermukhamet Yertysbayev has resigned as chairman of the People’s Party of Kazakhstan, Orda.kz reports.
Delegates accepted his resignation at an extraordinary party congress in Astana and elected Nursultan Shokanov as the new chairman.
At the congress, Yertysbayev said the party had strengthened its position over the past three years and supported President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s political course. He described the leadership change as “a natural stage” in the development of a political organization.
Nursultan Shokanov was born in Almaty in 1986. He studied finance at KIMEP and later received an Executive MBA from IMD Business School in Switzerland. He began his career at Ernst & Young and later worked in senior positions at the oil service company Sandrilling. Since 2009, he has been involved in business and now chairs the board of directors of OMIR Group.
Since 2021, Shokanov has been a deputy of the Almaty maslikhat from the People’s Party, where he worked on construction, architecture and urban infrastructure issues. Since December 2022, he has headed the party’s Almaty city and regional branches. In 2023, he headed the Atameken regional chamber of entrepreneurs in Almaty and later became deputy chairman of Kazakhstan’s National Chamber of Entrepreneurs Atameken.
The leadership change comes amid a visible reshuffling of Kazakhstan’s party system ahead of the Kurultai elections. Earlier in June, the new pro-presidential Adilet party voted to absorb Amanat, long seen as the ruling party and linked to old Kazakhstan elites. Ak Zhol and Auyl also changed their leadership. Now the People’s Party has become part of the same pre-election pattern.
