Kazakhstan has completed one of the most difficult stages of its underwater fiber-optic cable project linking the country to Azerbaijan across the Caspian Sea, Orda.kz reports.
Kazakhtelecom chairman Bagdat Musin announced the completion of horizontal directional drilling in the coastal zone of Aktau. Specialists drilled an underground channel through coastal rocks to create a path for the cable to reach the Caspian Sea.
One of the most difficult stages of the project has been successfully completed. Now the way to the sea is ready,Musin said.
The next stage is the laying of the fiber-optic cable itself along the Caspian seabed. The cable was previously delivered to the port of Kuryk by special heavy trawls.
Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan began construction of the Trans-Caspian digital highway in February 2026. It will be the first underwater fiber-optic cable across the Caspian Sea, connecting the telecommunications networks of both countries and forming part of a broader digital corridor between Europe and Asia.
