Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov accused Russian State Duma deputy and war veteran Vladimir Shamanov of crimes against civilians during the Chechen wars, calling him “the most brutal general toward the Chechen people” and demanding he be “sent to a tribunal,” Orda.kz reports, citing The Caucausian Knot.

The remarks came after Shamanov opposed the renaming of three Chechen towns — Naurskaya to Nevra, Shelkovskaya to Terek, and Sernovodskoe to Sernovodsk — saying it erased the historical memory of Cossack settlements.

Critics in Moscow also noted the costs would be borne by taxpayers.

Kadyrov dismissed the objections, saying the changes reflect today’s ethnic realities:

Now that we started renaming towns, this vile scoundrel Shamanov has spoken up. He used to march men into fields and execute them. His crimes will catch up with him.

He stressed that Grozny would not be renamed, despite past proposals, honoring his father Akhmat Kadyrov’s decision to keep the historic name.

The renaming campaign in Chechnya has been ongoing for years, often tied to national heroes or Kadyrov family figures.
