According to Kazhydromet’s main hydrological forecast, the highest probability of flooding is expected in Akmola, Karaganda, North Kazakhstan and East Kazakhstan regions, as well as in Abay region, Orda.kz reports.
The forecast was compiled based on an analysis of long-term hydrometeorological observations. Specialists considered autumn soil moisture, the depth of soil freezing, the volume of snow accumulation, and expected weather conditions during the snowmelt period.
Experts warned that if weather conditions develop unfavorably, flooding of settlements, farmland, and infrastructure facilities is possible.
In Akmola region, the elevated risk is linked to the Yesil, Kalkutan, Zhabay and Selety rivers, especially in Astrakhan, Bulandy, Arshaly, Tselinograd, Atbasar and Ereimentau districts, as well as in the city of Kosshy.
In Karaganda region, attention is focused on the Nura and Sherubainura river basins. In North Kazakhstan region, the risk is associated with areas downstream of the Sergeevsky reservoir. In East Kazakhstan and Abay regions, the high risk is attributed to significant autumn soil moisture, deep soil freezing, and large snow reserves.
Regions with an average flood-risk level include Kostanay, Pavlodar, Almaty and Aktobe regions.
Kazhydromet experts plan to issue weekly short-term hydrological forecasts to keep the public informed once rivers break up from ice cover.
Earlier, we reported that in three districts of North Kazakhstan region, important contracts were not concluded ahead of the floods.
