The Prosecutor General’s Office could be asked to review the Dubai property holdings of Kazakhstanis. Majilis deputy Yerlan Sairov said he plans to send an inquiry to the Prosecutor General’s Office after new information emerged, Orda.kz reports.
On March 1, a rocket fell in Dubai near the Fairmont The Palm residential complex, sparking a fire. Social media users began discussing whether properties owned by wealthy Kazakhstanis, including former officials, might have been affected. Investigative journalists say 97 apartments in the complex belong to Kazakhstanis.
Many of the owners mentioned are described as representatives of “old Kazakhstan.” Among those named are the son of former Senate Chairman Kairat Mami, Baghdat Batalov, the wife of former Almaty region akim Amandyk Batalov, and others.
I think I will send a letter to the Prosecutor General’s Office so they can look at it from a legal point of view. And from a moral point of view, I think it’s wrong. It’s even inhumane toward the people of our country. Sairov said on the sidelines of the Majilis.
Sairov said his request would ask the Prosecutor General’s Office to give a legal assessment of former officials’ ownership of foreign real estate.
