Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu has been dismissed from his post, Aqorda announced today, Orda.kz reports.
Once seen as one of President Qasym-Jomart Toqayev’s most trusted officials, Nurtleu’s career advanced rapidly on the strength of both loyalty and competence. When Toqayev assumed the presidency in 2019, he brought Nurtleu into his team as an assistant.
The January 2022 unrest marked a turning point: following Karim Massimov’s resignation, Nurtleu was elevated to first deputy chair of the National Security Committee.
On February 1, 2022, he was appointed head of the Presidential Administration, overseeing domestic policy and personnel matters. The following spring, in April 2023, Nurtleu rose again — this time to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, replacing Mukhtar Tileuberdi.
From then until his removal, Nurtleu managed Kazakhstan’s most sensitive foreign policy initiatives and regularly accompanied Toqayev at negotiations abroad.
His influence was further highlighted in February 2024, when he briefly served as acting prime minister during Alikhan Smailov’s absence — a sign of his weight within the government hierarchy.
He was replaced by Yermek Kosherbayev, who was appointed Kazakhstan’s new Foreign Minister.
