Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered negotiations with Kazakhstan on amendments to the countries’ military-technical cooperation agreement. A similar order covers Uzbekistan, Orda.kz reports.
The orders were published on Russia’s official legal information portal. They do not specify which provisions of the agreements may be revised.
Kazakhstan and Russia signed their military-technical cooperation agreement in December 2013. It covers arms and military equipment supplies, exchanges of defense-related products, and transfers of technology and technical documentation.
In recent years, Kazakhstan has received Su-30SM fighter jets, Mi-171Sh and Mi-35M helicopters, Buk-M2E air defense systems, and BTR-80 and BTR-82A armored personnel carriers from Russia. In 2015, Russia also transferred five S-300PS systems to Kazakhstan for their joint regional air defense system.
The order came several days after Tokayev and Putin met in Omsk. The presidents discussed trade, energy, transportation, Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant, and the war in Ukraine. Neither side publicly mentioned plans to revise the military cooperation agreement.
