Construction Of Kazakhstan’s First Nuclear Power Plant To Begin In 2027
The active phase of construction of Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant will begin in 2027, Orda.kz reports.
This was announced by Rosatom head Alexey Likhachev. The launch of the plant is expected in the mid-2030s.
We will launch it in stages, unit by unit, I think with an interval of eight to 10 months between the first and second units. Our task is to complete this project by the mid-2030s,Likhachev said.
The timeline was confirmed by Kazakhstan’s Atomic Energy Agency.
Earlier, officials had named later possible construction dates. Agency head Almasadam Satkaliyev previously said work could begin no earlier than 2029, explaining that the timing depended on design decisions and the equipment selected.
During Vladimir Putin’s state visit, Kazakhstan and Russia may sign two intergovernmental agreements on the project. Atomic Energy Agency spokesperson Shyngys Ilyasov said the documents concern the construction of the plant and project financing.
Earlier, the government approved a comprehensive localization plan for the nuclear industry for 2026–2030. The document focuses on preparing Kazakh enterprises to participate in nuclear power plant construction.
Kazakhstan’s first nuclear power plant will be built near the village of Ulken in the Almaty region.
