Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates have signed a memorandum on mutual recognition of driver's licenses, allowing citizens of both countries to drive without obtaining a local license, Orda.kz reports.

The memorandum was signed in Abu Dhabi by the heads of both countries' interior ministries. Kazakhstan's delegation was led by Interior Minister Yerzhan Sadenov, who met with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The document will take effect after both sides complete their domestic procedures.

The Kazakh Interior Ministry says the agreement will affect hundreds of thousands of people. Around 400,000 Kazakhstani tourists visit the UAE each year, and another 14,000 Kazakhstani citizens live there permanently.

Under the memorandum, tourists will be able to use their home country license without obtaining a local one, within the conditions set by UAE legislation. For those relocating permanently or long-term, the agreement provides a simplified procedure for exchanging licenses.

The ministers also discussed cooperation on drug trafficking, cybercrime, transnational organized crime and the exchange of operational information.
