A camera trap captured two protected goitered gazelles sparring in Charyn State National Nature Park, Orda.kz reports.

The goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa), known locally as the jeyran, is a rare antelope listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book.

The species inhabits deserts and semi-deserts and can reach speeds of 60–70 kilometers per hour, helping it escape predators.

Jeyran numbers have declined significantly because of poaching, human encroachment on their habitat and shrinking food supplies.

The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said the national park continuously works to protect rare species and preserve their natural habitats.Camera traps are also used to monitor wildlife and track the animals’ distribution, population and behavior.
