National Falconry Team Member Kept 35 Rare Birds Illegally

A Karaganda resident allegedly kept rare birds of prey captured from the wild at his home for several years. Officers from Kazakhstan’s Financial Monitoring Agency (FMA) found 35 falcons, golden eagles and other protected birds during a search, Orda.kz reports.
According to the FMA, the man set up an illegal aviary on his property in 2017. He belonged to the Kusbegilik Federation and was a member of Kazakhstan’s national falconry team.
Investigators say the suspect used Instagram to post about traditional falconry and the care and treatment of birds. Through the platform, he allegedly met people who brought him rare birds of prey captured in the wild.
During a search of the property, officers found and seized 35 birds of prey, including saker falcons, golden eagles and peregrine falcons. These species are listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book and are classified as rare and endangered. The suspect is in custody, and a court has ordered the seizure of his Toyota 4Runner,the FMA said.
The agency said the birds would be released back into the wild once the relevant court decision takes effect. It did not disclose further details of the investigation.
