A fishing trip nearly ended in tragedy on the evening of March 23 in the Yeskeldy district of Kazakhstan’s Jetisu Region, Orda.kz reports.
Two men were fishing on a technical reservoir when their boat suddenly capsized. One of them, 62-year-old Askhat Shayakhmetov, became entangled in a fishing net. His companion, 36-year-old Aman Ospanov, attempted to help but soon lost strength in the freezing water.
Patrol officers Captain Mukhtar Nurmukhambetov and Lieutenant Bekkazy Baibol were first on the scene. Hearing the cries for help, Captain Nurmukhambetov jumped into the icy water and reached the two men. One was tangled in a net, while the other was clinging to the overturned boat and losing strength.
A rescuer from the emergency services joined the effort, followed shortly by an investigative team. Officer Omirbek Senbay tied a rope to himself and entered the water to assist in pulling the men to safety.
Earlier, Orda.kz reported that police in Pavlodar rescued a pregnant woman attempting to jump from a bridge.
