According to KazTAG sources, Aidos Yespolov — the brother of Asel Isabayeva, the youngest wife of Nursultan Nazarbayev — has been detained, Orda.kz reports. His name has repeatedly surfaced in connection with projects around EXPO-2017.
Aidos Yespolov comes from a prominent family. He is the eldest son of academician Tlektess Yespolov and the brother of Asel Isabayeva, who has been said to be in a civil union with Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Another brother, Bektenbay Yespolov, previously held senior positions in the Presidential Administration and the Samruq-Qazyna fund.
Earlier, MP Yermurat Bapi raised the issue of a criminal case involving embezzlement at “Astana EXPO-2017.”
In his inquiry, he mentioned Aidos Yespolov by name. His name also appeared during statements made to the media by attorneys representing the main defendant in the large-scale EXPO-2017 embezzlement case.
Yespolov is also the former husband of Gulmira Nazarbayeva, daughter of Bolat Nazarbayev. He adopted her son from her first marriage, Nursain Nazarbayev. The former couple also has a child together — Nurbolat.
Orda.kz has previously written about the business assets of Gulmira Nazarbayeva and Nursain Nazarbayev.
Journalists attempted to contact the family. Nursain Nazarbayev hung up after hearing the topic of inquiry. A call to Nurbolat Nazarbayev’s phone went unanswered.
