A camera trap in Ile-Alatau National Park has captured footage of an Indian porcupine, a rare species listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book, reports Orda.kz.
The Indian crested porcupine is a nocturnal animal that feeds on plants and prefers hidden, quiet places. It’s easy to recognize thanks to its powerful quills, which it uses to defend itself from predators.
The Indian porcupine is an extremely rare species for Kazakhstan. Its appearance shows that this species continues to live steadily within its natural range and gives scientists a valuable chance to study its population and activity, the park’s team noted.
