Almaty has taken the first step toward implementing the long-awaited metro line to the Barlyk market. The city’s State Assets Department has allocated almost three billion tenge for the development of design and estimate documentation. The corresponding lot was published on the public procurement website, Orda.kz reports.
The tender for the design documentation appeared on the public procurement website on May 28, although applications from potential suppliers will be accepted from June 4 to 9.
According to the project, the new section will connect the Kalkaman station, which is currently under construction, with the Barlyk market. The line will run west along Abay Avenue, turn north along Alatau Avenue, and reach Raiymbek Avenue near the shopping rows.
Three new underground stations are planned along the route. The first will be located on Alatau Avenue just north of Abay Avenue. The second will be built on the same avenue, closer to Tole Bi Street. The final station will open on the territory of the Barlyk market.
The tender conditions for designers are strict. The contractor will not receive an advance payment and will carry out all work at its own expense. The akimat will pay only after the project is fully completed. In addition, the company must provide a three-year warranty for its design documentation.
Residents of the Nauryzbay district and nearby suburbs have long been waiting for this line, as the entrance to the city from Kaskelen is often heavily congested.
Earlier, Orda.kz reported that by the end of 2027, Almaty plans not only to purchase 10 new electric trains but also to update the metro traffic control system.
