Astana’s LRT may be renamed Tarlan-Astana. Deputies proposed the change at a meeting of the city maslikhat, Orda.kz reports.
No final decision has been made yet. Earlier, the system operator, CTS, said the abbreviation LRT, or Light Rail Transit, is a widely accepted international term and that there were no plans to change it.
Doszhan Isabek, acting head of Astana’s Department of Language Development and Archival Affairs, said residents had suggested several possible names, including Sunkar, Lashyn, Aspan and Tarlan. The commission supported the Tarlan-Astana option.
It is proposed not just to name the LRT, but to give it a short, user-friendly name with cultural significance,Isabek said.
An additional 18.3 billion tenge will also be allocated to improve and develop the urban environment around LRT stations.
