The son of former Kyrgyz Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov is reportedly being held in a pre-trial detention center in Almaty, Orda.kz reports.
He is allegedly accused of creating a transnational criminal group and smuggling tobacco.
Kaktus.media, citing its sources, reported that Urmat Usenov is being held in pre-trial detention center No. 18 in Almaty.
According to the publication, Usenov is suspected of illegal business activity and creating a transnational organized group. Two other Kyrgyz citizens and one Kazakh citizen are also involved in the case.
According to the investigation, the damage amounted to 26 million tenge. More than 1.6 tons of hookah tobacco worth more than 46 million tenge were seized from the detainees. On March 10, a court in Almaty authorized the detention of the suspects for two months, the publication said.
Orda.kz contacted the Almaty Police Department and the State Revenue Department. At the time of publication, no response had been received.
Urmat’s father is a well-known figure. Daniyar Usenov headed Kyrgyzstan’s government under President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. After the April Revolution of 2010, he fled the country. He was later accused of withdrawing hundreds of millions of dollars, only a small portion of which was returned. In Kyrgyzstan, he was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison.
Usenov settled in Belarus, changed his name to Daniil Uritsky, and headed the Belarusian National Biotechnology Corporation. Kyrgyz public figures identified him, and Belarusian journalists asked about this directly. In response, they were told that Usenov had allegedly died in Malaysia in 2013. However, in 2020, Alexander Lukashenko openly called Uritsky “Daniyar” during a visit to the BNBC plant.
